Zoom Call Styling

At the beginning of lock down, we slipped into old joggers, pulled on comfy jumpers and rejoiced in not having to make an effort. But as time has sped along - Winter has turned to Summer and working from home with video calls has become the norm - our wardrobe needs have changed! Our usual go-to pieces are no longer suitable and we are left with fresh wardrobe dilemmas.

You want to arrive at a Zoom meeting, making the best impression you can, just as you would in a regular face to face scenario. Even more so in some instances as we have a smaller window in which to perform. So, what should we be wearing?

We are told that waist up is sufficient, so we’re off to a flying start since we don’t need to create full outfits. However don’t get caught out as my friend did the other day.

Wearing a fabulous new top, his dog started to bark LOUDLY in the background and not thinking he jumped up in his underwear to attend to the dog, forgetting he was on camera.

Metaphorically, grab yourself a good seat at the meeting

  •  Good lighting in front of you or side angled is not only more flattering but also ensures you are clearly seen and you are not a shadow in the corner.

  • Appropriate/relevant background will form a part of who you are. Think about what you want to say about yourself.  A bookcase, art or greenery are all good neutral backdrops but if in doubt, go for a blank wall.

  • Position yourself as a newsreader does, within your screen. You (head and shoulders) should be the dominant feature not your stunning garden that you've been cultivating for the last 2 months. However you don’t want to see nose hairs either. Ensure you are level with the camera, to avoid double chins or ceiling-scapes.

My top buys that will have you kitted out for video calls and take you through working from home this summer

Blazers

A white , cream or ivory (depending on your colouring) blazer is the perfect summer Zoom call throw on. It will go with everything and create an instant smart note, even if worn over a vest top or playsuit. H&M do a superb range of neutral blazers in a variety of shapes and colours and at mostly £34.99 they are excellent value too.

White or Ivory tops

Vests, Tees, Blouses or Shell tops in the right neckline for your body shape, with simple non fussy detailing, will ensure you have a top for every occasion. I’m all for colour too, but ensure it is the right colour for you and that it enhances, rather than drain or over power you.

Top Tip: If you find a top you like, check if it comes in white/ivory and buy that alongside the fancy colour. I guarantee you will get heaps of wear from it!

Necklaces and earrings

A fabulous pair of earrings or a statement necklace will lift up or alter a basic summer dress or classic blouse immediately. Never has jewellery had such a prominent place, than on video chats. It is also an effective and economic way of creating multiple outfits by simply changing up the jewellery on the same outfit in countless meetings. Zara and & Other Stories have a super collection of inexpensive statement necklaces and fun earrings.

Joggers

So, although we are predominately talking top half, you’ll still probably want to put something on your bottom half. Posh joggers in dark tones are smart enough to cope with the odd glimpse on film and are super comfy for any expanding waistlines. However It is important to get the styling right to avoid looking like you’re still wearing PJ’s. I love to pair a jogger with a blazer or leather jacket. It gives them a cool factor and stops them looking like gym clothes. It takes them ‘out to lunch’, rather than ‘rolled out of bed’. Joggers are selling out like loo roll did in the early days. Hush, do a great selection but of course they keep selling out. I’m assured more stock is on it’s way..

If your fed up with or just can’t handle joggers - go for an elasticated or elastic back waist, flat front trouser. Smarter but just as comfortable. Zara and Whistles have great modern takes on these.

Little Black/White or Navy Dresses

Keeping things neutral, gives longevity to the item. You’ll be able to wear the same navy dress on repeat Zoom calls with different necklaces, earrings or a blazer to keep it fresh. For something a bit more fancy or high fashion, take advantage of the super bargains to be found right now as retailers manage their stock mountains due to current slower sales. Boden have a great range of dresses to suit most body shapes and usually have an offer on. Jigsaw, Reiss and Whistles are in good stock of beautiful discounted pieces.

Jumpsuits

Still on trend, because they are so versatile! The old ‘going to loo’ hassle that is commonly sited with jumpsuits is sorted with us being at home. There is so much choice available too, so, whether jersey, denim or as a playsuit( shorts) is your thing, they will look smart on screen and be comfortable too!

Denim Shorts

A pair of denim shorts are a must on any summer shopping list. For those of us able to wear jeans to work, these are the ideal alternative for home working. My rule for selecting denim shorts is the opposite to jeans. Mid-rise and slightly too big is the way to go for an understated coastal vibe. Style with a classic white tee or vest and dress your look up for a Zoom call with a statement necklace and/or your trusty blazer.

Regardless of whether I’m seeing anyone, I always feel better equipped to deal with a day’s issues if I feel I look half decent. Whether that is home learning (don’t get me started) or doing an on-line shopping trip with a client- getting up, getting dressed and putting on make up has a huge impact on my state of mind. If you need help finding the pieces to lift or build your summer wardrobe get in touch.
