What to wear on a first date

Online dating is the most conventional way of meeting someone and finding love these days; especially in one’s slightly older years, when gone are the days of casual introductions in bars and pubs.

Of course, this means the first date will most often be, the first ‘real life’ impression you make.

No pressure - huh?!

Getting ready for a date can be stressful enough without worrying about what you are going to wear - but luckily help is at hand to relieve those ‘what to wear’ anxieties; leaving you feeling confident with just the date to focus on.

Whether your date is a country walk, a coffee or an evening meal at a posh restaurant; the number one rule is to be comfortable and number two is to be yourself!

“But my comfortable is joggers and slippers and I don’t know what ‘me’ is, when it comes to clothes!”

Sound familiar? Well, you're not alone. It is easy to become stuck in a style rut and when faced with the prospect of dating; discover that you don’t know what suits you anymore.

Being comfortable in your clothes is about dressing for YOU! - Wearing clothes that make you feel happy, unrestricted and ultimately, like yourself.

Being yourself is about dressing to YOUR body shape - highlighting your best bits and diminishing the ‘less good’ bits and wearing the colours and colour combinations that flatter and bring out the best in you.

This will create 80% of YOUR style - add a finishing dollop of your style personality (personal likes/dislikes) - and boom you’re all set!

Good style is comfortable; so when it feels right - you will look great!

In the meantime, here are some failsafe spring date formulas.

Outfit 1 - Casual day

Jeans - A pair of your favourite jeans (that fit and flatter beautifully) are the ideal date staple. Style them with a turn-up and/or a belt according to your jean’s style and your shape.

Top - Add a tee, jumper, shirt or blouse in your neckline and again style it according to your shape - fully tucked/half tucked or worn loose (no longer than the hip). Wear a vest top or tee under for a layering effect.

Blazer - A blazer (in your figure enhancing shape) is a wardrobe essential. It will provide that ‘not trying too hard’ effortless style.  Not too smart worn with jeans and not too casual worn over a dress - just right!

Trench - If it’s still a bit chilly for just a blazer, a long line trench is a classic option that will lengthen and slim. Knot the trench loosely at the back to create waist definition. A long-line cardigan/coatigan will have the same effect.

White Trainers - There is nothing like a pair of white trainers to add oodles of coolness to any outfit!

Simply swap up the trainers for either a heel or an ankle boot for a dressier scenario.

Outfit 2 -  Smarter evening

Dress/Jumpsuit - A dress or jumpsuit is a good option because you’ve a ready made outfit, with no worries about what to match with what. Pick out your favourite dress that you feel really good in and dress it up or down according to the date venue.

Leather or Denim Jacket - A leather jacket will relax a smarter dress/jumpsuit with a waist shaping effect. Or the blazer is the perfect ‘throw-on’ to instantly dress up a more casual dress.

Neutral Shoe - Add a (high/low) heel or ankle boot. Alternatively, a white trainer works a treat with a dress for the ultimate in casual de luxe, effortless style.

Accessorise

Accessories are a smashing way to add your personality and change up an outfit.

Sunglasses are the perfect date accompaniment but ensure it is vaguely sunny to avoid looking a tad pretentious.

A patterned scarf will pull an outfit together. Try a warmer scarf wrapped nonchalantly around to add a snuggly vibe.

Use jewellery according to your shape to draw the eye away or towards a feature.

A cross body bag will add shape to your outfit and leave you hands free for potential hand holding!!

Once you know what to wear and feel confident in yourself; you will be ready and excited to embark on your dating journey.
