A/W Trends 20/21

When Covid-19 first arrived, fashion was the last thing on our minds and any thoughts about clothes felt indecorous and foolish in the circumstances.

But as lockdown eases and we emerge from our nests with unruly hair and a few extra pounds we need energised and motivated. Looking forward and setting our sights on better times can be hugely cathartic.

Therefore, I’m embracing the Autumn/Winter 20/21 trends rather than the Summer trends, that have been absorbed under a Corona cloud, even though it was blisteringly hot last week and it feels like summer has just arrived.

So, looking forward to fresh beginnings and an uplifting new season - What’s on the menu?

What I wish I'd known at thirty-five...

My book club is the craziest thing- no one reads the book!

It is strictly non-fiction (that’s a rule but reading the book isn’t!) which explains the madness somewhat as it makes it easy to read a chapter here and there and still be united by the essence of a book club.

At this month’s club, after a catch up on life and a few glasses of wine (let’s face it, that is the real substance of most book clubs) with much shock, we actually started discussing a chapter in Norah Ephron’s, “I feel bad about my neck” In the chapter entitled - “What I wish I’d known”, number eleven on her list is;

“Anything you think is wrong with your body at the age of thirty-five you will be nostalgic for by the age of forty-five”

What do you wish you’d known?

It's nearly here... Spring/Summer 19

I love this time of year. New beginnings and the anticipation of what’s just around the corner. I know it’s freezing cold out and there is snow in the air, but all I can think about is longer days (have you noticed its still light at 5pm?), the new items filling the shop floors in their droves and which pieces are going on my wish list…

Prepare your wardrobe; edit out the worn jumpers from Winters’ gone by, clear last year’s pieces that you simply never wore (you know them - the ones you put on but never made it out the front door) and make space for the zesty treats to come..

So, what are the big trends this Spring/Summer and which ones will work for you?

10 Top Tips to Master One-Tone Dressing

Both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton did monochromatic dressing beautifully on Christmas day. Kate head to toe in seasonal berry and Meghan in classic navy. Dressing head to toe in one colour is an art, which can give you a chic and sophisticated look if mastered. Shoes and boots don’t always have to match up in my book. A contrasting shoe to a tonal outfit can create a stylish edge and save you effort and money whilst still creating the one-tone look.

Choosing the right colour to do the look in, whether to add a contrasting shade or keep it strict and how to use it to flatter your body shape are all things to consider. Here are my top 10 tips to nail tonal dressing…

My favourite clothes shops in Cambridge

London is a great shopping city. I put it up there next to New York as one of the best. Spoilt for choice; I could rifle through rails in street markets abuzz with the excitement of a vintage designer find or head to Oxford Street, knowing that, the best the retailer had to offer would be on show and in stock in my size.   When I first moved to Cambridge I was enthralled by its rustic, ‘film set’ charm but for fashion shopping, I wasn't convinced.  However over the years I've discovered some real gems which now form part of my 'staple shopping diet'.

Why use a Personal Stylist?

I met a friend and ex-colleague for dinner recently and was telling her about my new role as a personal stylist.

“It sounds great!“ she enthused  “but I simply don’t have the time, and I’d rather spend the cost of hiring a stylist on buying more clothes.”

At the time I just nodded awkwardly and fretted about my chosen career path, but on the train home I thought about that statement and just how ill informed and contradictory it is.  A good personal stylist will do the very things my friend was claiming were the reasons not to hire one - i.e. to save you time and money!

But then I realised that most people probably think the same way, or certainly think that hiring personal stylist is an unaffordable luxury. So why should you use a personal stylist?
